Maralyn O’Brien

Chief Strategy Officer

Maralyn serves as the Chief Strategy Officer at the Chef Ann Foundation. Previously, she served in the Biden-Harris Administration, as a Senior Advisor to the US Secretary of Education, and as the Director of Strategic Planning at the White House. She deepened collaboration across federal agencies to connect education systems to federally funded economic development projects. She also stepped up the Administration’s efforts to fight for our nation’s students by publishing a set of Good Jobs Principles for the education workforce.

Her professional experience includes leading Federal Affairs at MoveOn, Regional Director at the National Education Association and includes project management from her time at the USO, program management in a civilian role with the US Marine Corps, and policy advocacy with the Service Employees International Union.

Maralyn lives in Virginia and also calls Michigan home. She enjoys chatting about cities, dogs and good food. She earned her BA in Political Science from Albion College and her MA in Urban Planning and Economic Development from Wayne State University. She serves on the Alexandria Beautification Commission and focuses on sustainability.

American kids start their life-path in K–12 schools where they learn the skills necessary to thrive & meet their potential. While the country debates the best ways to teach them math, science & English, we spend little to no time on food & nutrition.
